Home ventilation systems - According to the AAFA, the top
five asthma capitals are: Knoxville, TN (#1), Memphis, TN
(#2), Louisville, KY (#3), Toledo, OH (#4) and Washington,
DC (#5). Rankings were based on 12 prevalence, risk and medical
factors related to asthma including air quality.
Another study released this month
and supported by the National Institute of Environmental
Health Services (NIEHS) shows bacteria lurking in household
dust produce chemicals that may trigger asthma and asthma-related
symptoms.
With more than half of the 20 million asthmatics
suffering from allergic asthma, the AAFA and NIEHS states
it is essential asthma control and prevention begin in the
home and recommends what the Environmental Protection Agency
recommends – keeping the home adequately ventilated
and maintaining a relative humidity at about 50 percent or
below.
“Molds are very common in damp areas and people
develop allergies to molds. That reality can lead to anything
from just a runny nose or a constant drip to sinus infections,
to headaches, and in some people to asthmatic conditions,” said
Marc Sicklick, MD, a practicing allergist and Clinical Associate
Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New
York. “I'm a very strong advocate of dehumidifying
areas where molds and dust mites grow. This is very effective
and I discuss this at length, well before I discuss using
medication or allergy shots.”
Humidex ventilates the
home and keeps relative humidity at 50% or below. It is designed
to automatically monitor relative humidity and improves indoor
air quality by constantly expelling moist, musty and contaminated
air and replacing it with drier, warmer and fresher air.
The airflow created significantly improves indoor air quality
by reducing allergens that trigger asthma. Unlike traditional
air purifiers, Humidex creates a natural ventilation process,
without introducing anything bad into the environment. Additionally,
the system is maintenance free and does not need filters.
- Thoroughly clean the home.
Frequent dusting with a damp cloth and vacuuming can help
to reduce the amount of dust particles in the air
- Wash
all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water to kill
dust mites - Vent bathrooms and clothes dryers to the outside,
and run bathroom and kitchen vents while bathing and cooking
- Prevent the entry of pollen by keeping windows and doors
closed
- Increase ventilation, decrease humidity. This
can be done by installing Humidex, a home ventilation system
and humidity control system.
